Many people complain that medicines taste disgusting and in most cases people are correct! Flucloxacillin is an antibiotic that is known to be one of those horrible tasting medicines. I have recently been in conversation with people to find out what is done in practice to hide this foul taste.
Previously I have used Mumsnet for research purposes and found that parents are mixing this medicine with nutella, jam, peanut butter or ice cream just to make it palatable for the child. However, there is no evidence as to what this may do to the medicine as it is administered or the consequences on the absorption of the drug. I am hoping to undertake a broader study to find out what is done in practice and whether it is possible to develop some guidance on what foods are useful both in terms of protecting the drug but also masking the foul taste.
Feel free to leave a comment if you have any thoughts on this or any experience of mixing medicines with food to try to make them acceptable.
